Alexander Pavlovsky is the founding member and first violinist of the world famous The Jerusalem Quartet, has established a reputation as a highly accomplished chamber musician, soloist and pedagogue.
Mr. Pavlovsky was born in Kiev, Ukraine and immigrated with his family to Israel in 1991. He is a graduate of all branches of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance – the Conservatory and the Academy where he was a student of Professor Matvey Liberman, and a follower of the school of the pre-eminent violinist David Oistrakh.
Alexander is a well known and experienced performer from early youth, performing solo and chamber music on the world’s most prestigious stages.
As the leader of The Jerusalem Quartet Mr. Pavlovsky is a regular and beloved guest around the globe. With regular bi-annual visits to North America, the quartet regularly performs in cities such as New York, Chicago,
Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Tucson, Portland, Washington, and Cleveland. In Europe, the quartet enjoys an enthusiastic reception with regular appearances in all prestige concert halls such as the Zürich Tonhalle, the Munich Herkulessaal, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, the Parisian Salle Pleyel and Cite de la Musique, Berliner Konzerhaus and Philharmonie, as well as a regular touring in Asia and Australia.
Alexander Pavlovsky is a frequent guest at international festivals like Verbier, Schlezwig-Holstein, Gstaad, Reingau, Schubertiade, Salzburg, Jerusalem, String Quartet Biennial Festivals in Philharmonie de Paris and Amsterdam.
Mr. Pavlovsky has collaborated with many famous musicians such as Sir András Schiff, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Daniel Barenboim, Mitsuko Uchida, Jessye Norman, Alexander Melnikov, Denise Kozhukhin, Menahem Pressler, Gary Hoffman, Stiven Isserlis, Natalia Gutman, Joshua Bell, Paul Meyer, Orfeo Mandozzi, Sharon Kam, Nobuko Imai, Frans Helmerson, Daniel Muller-Schott, Alisa Weilerstein, Miklos Perenyi, Martin Frost, Andreas Ottensamer, Lawrence Power and Tabea Zimmermann. He performed also with Szymanowski, Belcea, Eben, Prazak and Vermeer Quartets.
With The Jerusalem Quartet, Alexander Pavlovsky records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi label since 2004, and these recordings of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Smetana, Janacek, Dvorak, Brahms, Shostakovich, Bartok music won the world record of 3 BBC Music Magazine Awards and a number of Diapason D’Or Awards.
Since 2022 he holds a professor of string chamber music position at the University of Music and performing Arts in Graz. Since 2008 he is Artistic Director of the “Zeist Music Days” International Chamber Music Festival and Masterclasses in The Netherlands, and regularly gives master classes in Europe, North America and Asia. The rare experience Pavlovsky has acquired is an incalculable asset, not only providing tremendous and valuable knowledge for his students, but also in working on the students personal and group sound, and images as a stage performer.
Mr. Pavlovsky plays on 1696 Antonio Stradivarius violin from an anonymous benefactor, and Stefan-Peter Greiner violin made in 2009.
